It was also to do with the Royal Navy buying copper sheeting and copper coach screws to line the hulls of their ships with - discouraged barnacles etc. The Mint also couldn't be bothered with producing lower denomination coinage - they'd farmed that out to Matthew Boulton a few years previously so had gone back to sleep.

The obverse includes a likeness of the the state seal. Here's a better state seal rendition:

Have seen examples of the centennial medal in "flat" or "white" metal. There's also a version where "LINCOLN COUNTY" replaces the "BATTLE BORN" "36" on the reverse.

Found this in a lot of silver coins purchased on ebay. William L. Ellis & Co was an Oyster Packer in Baltimore from 1865-1888. It seems scarce but I have no idea what it is currently worth as there are no sales records online.

Excellent token, dar! It's probably very desirable, as there are avid collectors of seafood packing / canning tokens from that area.

Picked up a lot of McIlhenny tokens - 4 new to me. My set of now includes all 9 used by this company. Near and dear to me, as I grew up 10 miles from Avery Island, and the Tabasco factory was a staple of school field trips. I'll post images of all 9 in a separate thread. Note - the cut one is as issued.
