Read founded The Celluloid Starch Company in 1886 to manufacture and distribute a newly invented laundry starch which gave laundry a satiny finish. The product was named Celluloid Starch and it gained national recognition.A few different tokens were issued by this business. These tokens were likely supplied by the Scovill Manufacturing Company in Waterbury. The Celluloid Starch Company was either closed or purchased by another business around 1920. It was only used for a year or two, in the late 1920's, for a prison reform experiment and these tokens were part of that. When the experiment failed prison staff removed the tokens from usage entirely. beancounter's J. Dimmick piece is beautiful. Very attractive. Report this Post to the Staff
