Hello all, I am somewhat new to coin collecting, and just got into coin roll hunting. My favorite to collect has been Jefferson nickels (and older if I can find them). However, I was curious as to how you obtain your nickels to go through, as I see you guys all talking about going through multiple boxes of nickels yet all the banks I go to either don't keep customer rolled coins, and have to order new nickels for me, yet I always get brand new 2017 nickels and never anything older. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm in the OKC area if that helps

Is it a Main, high transaction Bank? That may be a problem - I go to the small Bank in the next town (not city) over from the one I live in and get my rolls. They are all wrapped in end fold overs (no end crimped rolled)and I find a nice selection of pre 60's. I never get boxes as you stand a chance of all new coins, I just get 20 rolls at a time, plus easier to dump 20 rolls. Never dump into the bank you get rolls from as you may just get them back.

Conner! I don't roll search personally however I have seen other posts where they specifically ask for customer wrapped rolls and always get less than "a box" worth.

@mark1959 no it's a small bank but for some reason, I find it impossible for me to obtain anything except for new coins. I haven't tried asking for customer rolled coins though, that is a good tip though, thank you Debrajc (sorry I haven't quite figured out how to respond to a post on mobile yet.. I'll get it soon though :))

to the CCF. You are not doing anything wrong ... just might have the wrong bank or approach. I obtain my nickels $20 at a time ... and if the tellers hand me obvious new coins I politely decline and ask for the 'older coin' nickel rolls. This works if you know the tellers and have a good relationship with the bank.

Quote: no it's a small bank but for some reason, I find it impossible for me to obtain anything except for new coins Then I'd go to another bank - except lots of banks won't deal if you don't have an account - at least this is how it is in my area.

Hi Connor, used to live in OKC many moons ago. Try another branch of the bank. Know they have one. Us CRHers find that we do well getting from one bank and returning to another. I'm fortunate that my bank takes my coin in free of charge and the other branch give me boxes. Helps to bring them a plate of cookies or box of donuts every now and then! You may try asking who brings the boxes(which service). Maybe the service is a local based, meaning they are close to the federal source, makes sense it'd be in OKC. Go to Edmond or south to Chickasha on your travels, pickup $10-$20 of rolls. Do a road trip, hit a bunch of smaller towns. The customer wrapped rolls just may be someone's dump coins, already looked thru. Most banks will give you a couple rolls even if you don't have an account. I used to get cents that way, get $5-$10 from 7 or 8 different banks, no accounts with even. Then I learned it all is delivered by the same two companies from their pickups, same source for coins!.

Best thing to do in this case is to find other banks in your area. That bank you're getting those boxes of new coins from may end up working for you as a "dump bank." Find a bank that is a "merchant bank" if you can, as they're the ones most likely to have coins coming in over time.
Personally, I like to do little mini "road trips" and hit as many banks as possible, noting where I got the coins from each time, so that when you search, you'll know which bank to go back to.
I recently just completed a set of nickels from 1934-Date from circulation over a 20 month period, so they are indeed out there... though where you're at, the five key dates will be difficult to find.
Good luck, and welcome to the forum!
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
