Just out of curiosity can silver bars tone blue. I saw some for sale on APMEX that were toned with blue everywhere. What causes this? |

Toning is such a witches brew of what environments cause different types of patination that you aren't likely to get an items history right by color examination.
Is it a deep blue, nearly purple, light sky blue?

I would think silver bars that are toned wouldn't be so popular (as compared to coins) - actually some people think toning is damage so for a silver bar I'd want a nice bright silver example. Or a raw silver bar (hand pored examples) has a beautiful matte silver coloring

Lookit the friggin rag marks! Oh yeah, purely a natural tone to that one, just wiped down with a bit of lemon Pledge to make it more shiny...months ago...  |

The colours which we coin collectors call "toning" are caused by the thin-film interference effect - essentially, a thin layer of corroded metal less than a micrometre thick is acting in much the same way as a layer of oil on water creates an "oil-slick rainbow". The colours can therefore match the colours of the rainbow. The thinnest layers give a red to yellow colour, then green, then blue. After blue comes black, as the layer becomes too thick for visible light to pass through it, so be aware, a piece of silver that shows blue toning is only a few puffs of smoke away from turning black. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Silver can tone that color. I have a coin from this year that did that just sitting on a desk with no help. If I had to guess I would bet that that bar was made that way for people who like the look
