A 175+ year old silver coin should not look like that. This example has been dipped and stripped, and I would no longer consider it original. JMHO. Report this Post to the Staff

The problem I have with dipping coins is that along with removing a thin layer of tarnish it also removes a thin layer of the coins 'skin'. Report this Post to the Staff

As do I. Thanks for making me better aware; I try to avoid obviously cleaned coins. There must be considerable demand for "bright" silver coins to make this "adjustment"--despite loss of some original surface? Then my question might be--is the surface of a dipped coin free from chemicals that will someday change its appearance?
