Just came across this beauty and I've been considering taking the steps to get it graded... what do you guys think?

Btw, what looks to be a scratch on obverse on the forehead of Jefferson's bust is actually on the plastic holder it's in and not on the coin itself!!

I can't tell FS from the pictures but they are common on the 1940-P. Unless your nickel will grade MS66FS or higher then it is not worth the money to get it graded.

A dead-sharp close up of the steps would help. But beyond that, the coin has issues and may well not even be uncirculated.

to the CCF!

Looks AU 58 to me. Don't grade this.

Save the money you would spend and buy another nice coin.

to the CCF ... if that has not already been said.

To my eye, with some significant experience in this series ... this coin is AU at best.

Perhaps it's your photographs in the 2x2 (remove the coin next time) ... but I do not see a full step example yet alone an MS coin.

Agree with moxking ... save your grading money as this one would likely disappoint.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

AU-58 may even be a 55 . Advise not to get it graded .

Thanks again for great feedback... Based on the AU grading how much does the Full Steps representation matter when determining its value? I could probably get a better close up to help determine that if I take it out of the holder!! But if it's insignificant at this grade I won't waste my time... lmk, ty

I would say it would be insignificant ,like Mark says the 40-P's are common in full steps . So yours in AU with possible FS would only have a minimal value .
