Hello All,
I came across this medallion while cleaning out my
parents' house. My mother said that she and my father
bought it at a bazaar in Cairo, Egypt in 1958.It
depicts Achilles tending to his cousin Patroclus in battle
on one side and the other has the Acropolis
intact.
I believe it may be bronze/copper, it has a bit of a green
patina to it and is quite heavy.I can
find no information on this item and would appreciate an
opinion on what I may have.

Interesting piece. I haven't seen one like it before, but the fabric suggests that it's a tourist item--soapy texture and also a perspective view of the building (Parthenon?) that was not used on ancient coins or medals. It is also nearly perfectly circular, which is rarely found even in ancient medallions.

I wonder if it was a paperweight?

Thanks for the reply. If you notice, there is a hole for a chain or leather strip so it can be worn around the neck. Also, the color of this piece is a golden brown, my phone is older than dirt and doesn't take very good pictures...

Hello and welcome. Your medal is certainly of modern and not ancient origin. The Parthenon did not look like that until after the Venetians accidentally blew it up in 1687; the building was still almost completely intact up until then.

It would be odd for a tourist souvenir of Egyptian origin to depict a Greek tourist site - makers of souvenirs usually like to promote their own country's tourist sites, not those of other countries. Are you sure your parents didn't visit Greece, or perhaps Cyprus, while in the area?

@sap,
My family travelled the world extensively before and after I was born. We have been to Cyprus(1978-79),Egypt,the middle east,south america and China, to name a few places. The house was full of old relics from everywhere, and some of the items they picked up turned out to be quite collectible. I thought that this medallion would be in that bracket.
Thanks for your response...
