This looks like Strike Doubling to me, but the R in trust looks really weird. Anyone know why?

You might want to check with the Shield nickel group on Yahoo to rule out a doubled die. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Shield_Nickels/

99, that one is very interesting. Can you get a closeup of the "R"?

The stars appear to be doubled also.

Mikediamond, thanks for the link but I'm already a member on there BUT I forgot the password to the e-mail/group it's in. I'll try to rattle my brain and try to figure it out.

I know there's a doubled die reverse for the 1870, but it's pretty drastic on the S in cents and on some of the reverse stars. I'm pretty sure it's not this. I've also looked in my other resources and nothing is listed but they are a bit dated.

Close up photos coming soon.

It's quite peculiar looking. But the manner in which the doubling completely surrounds the letters of IN GOD would indicate that it's something other than a doubled die.

I agree, it does not look like die doubling. The flatness of the doubling and the distortion of the lettering leads away from it. It my have been a loose die.

Thanks,

I think this could be multiple issues. It looks to me like there is significant die wear causing most of what is seen around "IN GOD", but there is also MD in the "TRUST". It always gets fun when there is more than one thing going on.
