Went to the Garden State Numismatic Association yesterday. I haven't been to a coin show in many years but thought I would make an attempt at this one. It was pretty cool and I learned a lot too. It's nice to be able to bounce around at the different tables and get the best price for what you are looking for. Unfortunately, I didn't have a plan at all when I started. Then I focused and decided to pick up some GSA morgans that I have wanted for a while now. Got my first 1787 NJ copper, '54 and a '58 proof set and finished off my Franklin collection. I was a little nervous after 10 minutes there. I was browsing at this one guys table and he was in a deep discussion with someone. The dealer said to him, "just take it out and dip it". The guy said he would never do that. I looked at the dealer to see if he was going to laugh like what he said was a joke, but he didn't. Needless to say I walked away from his table. E

veryone kept telling me about another show in Paramus that is bigger than the one I went to yesterday, so I'm going to look into it and go to that one. Anybody from here go to the show or are planning to? Question about coin shows. I'd like to bring my son to one, but he's only 4, is it appropriate to bring little kids?

4 might be a little young(short attention span, eagerness to touch everything in sight) but my dad took me to my first show around age 7 and I still remember seeing a $2 1/2 Indian for the first time and wanting to stare at it all day long because I thought the incuse design was so awesome and the denomination was so strange. I took $5 of my hard earned money with me and spent it all on coins that were 25c-$1(early 80s) and I still have a few of those to this day.

I plan on going to the GSNA show this afternoon. I usually go with a list, but then forget everything and get whatever catches my eye. I haven't heard the comment about dipping recently, but have heard dealers say that before. You can read lots of opinions on the subject of dipping here, my own is to focus on what you are buying - if a coin has been dipped and it was done well, it would be hard to tell it from an undipped (IMHO). I figure it's best to weed out the obviously cleaned/dipped and either pass them by or bid appropriately knowing what you are buying. If you are really concerned about it, then only buy slabbed (and hope the coins weren't dipped well enough to fool the graders at PCGS or NGC).

My daughter is 4 and likes coins, but I am waiting till she is a little older and will see if she is really interested before I would take her to a coin show.

I have heard the monthly coin show in Parsippany is worth the trip. I was going to the monthly one in Old Bridge for a while since it was closer to me (and they have a drawing for a free coin to boot!), but haven't had much $ to go recently. It's small, but the dealers are friendly and there is decent selection for U.S. coinage.

I'm not too concerned about the dipping, but when the dealer made that comment it just made it easy to keep walking. Not sure if he does or not, but his own reaction to the comment gave me pause. There were enough dealers that it didn't matter to me much.

My son's got an amazing attention span for his age, but he does like to touch everything. I can get him to stop wanting to grab everything by telling him that if he's good he gets to pick out a coin at the end of the day, you know like a bribe (I do that at coin shops). He's really likes morgans and Peace dollars. He's got a nice little collection started already and every dealer discounts coins quite a bit for him, so he's done well. I've also purchased "dealer lots" as you get the coins for much cheaper than if you bought them on their own. He gets these duplicates that I have for rewards when he has good behavior.

I'm more worried about the atmosphere. At a few tables there was quite a bit of foul language being thrown around. I grew up around truck drivers so it doesn't bother me in the least, but I never use language like that around my son so I like to keep him from that if I can.

Yeah I've got the information on the parsippany show, it's at the PAL building I believe. Everyone I talked to told me it was worth going. Don't know about the one in Old Bridge (much closer to me too), if you have info on this I'd like to stop by.

Have fun at the show, it was pretty cool. I'm itching to go back, there were a couple of proof Shields I'm really interested in, but it was about an hour North of me and the traffic coming back was a nightmare.
