I received a collection of Pre Decimal and modern coins recently and have found that some of the coins can be well struck but I am hesitant to call it a proof. Some I feel confident with identifying because the tone is completely different or I found enough information online to somewhat justify the decision. I don't feel like the old edge and rim strike are going to give me a 100% on most of it. I won't list a bunch of examples to take up time but suggestions on literature or websites wp would be appreciated. This 1962 Half Penny is probably not a proof but is struck well and has some reflectivity.

Nice coin but certainly does not look like not a proof.

Thanks Pertinax I thought it was a good addition. Also, you are probably right. The problem I have found is that these proof struck coins dont always have the same characteristics year after year. I saw that Heritage sold 2 completely different proof 58 Half Pennies. Yes they appear proof like but several don't have a clear cameo appearance. So if you have a wire rim on a well struck Business strike, which seems to be common, THEN you are trying to find every scrap of info to make sense of it all Lol! Which I don't mind as long as I know where to find it. So I am just going to show another example. Not trying to beat the topic to death or anything...promise haha! The 1st is again the 62 Half Penny. Now the second coin has insanely square wire rims. I apologize it isn't the clearest. It is still in a holder. But still my mind says proof. That's the only point I'm attempting to make. I'm sure there is a good book out there or two, to put me on the right direction.

Sorry I should have done this before. These are the 2 proof coins I was talking about.

These don't look like proofs unless they're greatly impaired proofs - look at all the scratches.

However, it's impossible to be sure from photographs.

If you think they're proofs, you should get them authenticated by a museum or a grading company.

It is just the holder they are in that makes it look like scratches. Nonetheless I would probably do more research before I considered submitting anything

Not proof and the top picture of the OBV looks cleaned IMO.
