Guys, thanks for the input and welcome! Glad to digitally be here. Here's another angle to show the clipped area in question—I apologize for not including this data. Zinc would show through if the PMD was a scrape, right? However, there's no visible zinc. The area has copper plating uniform with the rest of the coin surface.

I do not think it is PMD. A scrape would show zinc, not copper. This occurred before the plating process, which is of course before the minting process.

@jbuck thanks for the input. I'm hoping I find another zinc 1983+ error like this one someday.

I think the reverse rim under the clip is week showing the lack of metal to fill out the die.

I'm not convinced on this one. I think the reverse rim shows rubbing/friction that occurred when the obverse damage happened. Zinc wouldn't necasasrily have to show through if the plating wasn't broken and metal was pushed over during the scraping of the coin. Can't see the damaged area in question looking like that after the plating process and all force from the dies during the strike. Color of the area in question is consistent with PMD also

Quote: Zinc wouldn't necasasrily have to show through if the plating wasn't broken and metal was pushed over during the scraping of the coin. It would have to be a hit, not a scrape. The plating is too thin to not show any damage from a scrape that deep and an impact would show some sort of flattening or damage on the other side.

Jonathan can you post a clearer pic(closeup) of the edge of the area in question?

That would certainly help.

Guys, thanks for the insight! Sadly I'll have to get back to this topic when I upgrade my imaging capabilities—still a few paychecks away.
