Pictured below is a 1982 half ounce Krugerand. A friend had it in a necklace/pendant mount and asked if I would investigate. Judging by the pics, I couldn't go higher than AU because I think there is a lot of rub from wearing as a necklace. Having said that, I told her it was worth melt at a minimum, and have found nothing special about the year on ebay searching. Just curious if anyone knows anything to look for or any reason why it would be worth more than melt.

Thanks folks.

Catalogue says they're BV + 8% in Unc. Probably down to BV for a "damaged" one like that.

Based on the time I spend at dealers, I think they'll give you bullion price. This is particularly true for any mounted bullion coin.
The market is currently flooded with excess gold coins, where I've seen even Victoria Sovereigns go for melt--sad but true.

Not that it adds value or anything but this is one of the "illegal" Krugerrands that was banned from importation into most western countries during the Apartheid Era. Of course, they are completely legal now but the coin does at least have a history behind it.

As a whole, Krugerrands trade closer to bullion value than other government issued and denominated bullion coins and there have been more of them minted than any other gold bullion coin in the world.
