I found this beautiful coin at a dealer today. I saw something in the lettering under the loupe, but I didn't make the connection with the E/N variety listed in Krause until I got home. But clearly, under magnification, the E in REGINA is punched over an N. Perhaps someone with the Krause for this year can tell me what it says? detail of E/N:

G'day, I don't get very excited about errors, but that's quite nifty. Thois almost compensates for missing out on that 1913 shilling ! Peter in Oz

Curious. My 4th ed. Krause doesn't list this variety. Or rather, it does, but doesn't explain what the variety is. It simply has two entries for 1844 half farthings, one at $5 in VF, the other at $25, but doesn't explain the difference. I can only assume it's the E/N variety.
The Spink catalogue tends to confirm this. It lists normal 1844 half-farthings at £3 in VF, with the "1844 E/N in REGINA" listed at £20.

Thanks Sap, that seems to be the general range I've seen via Google.

I don't have the Krause but according to Collectors' Coins GB 2007, an EF is worth 80 GBP at the dealer level compared to 15 GBP for the regular variety. A clear diagonal bar there, and a very nice spot!

Investigating further, I began to wonder if lettering on the obverse varied from die to die, suggesting the legend was hand-punched, which might account for the E/N. I was curious how two obverse dies compared, so I overlaid an image of my coin with one from a non-E/N die: While not an exact overlay, the portrait, denticles, and most of the legend line up well, except where noted by arrows. In these places, you can see the ghost image of the letters at different angles. Those are where letter positions on my coin differ significantly.
