So years and years ago when I was with my ex, I got her into coin collecting with me. I would buy group lots of things so that we would both get similar additions to our collections. One day an order came in with a bunch of proof sets, and we were picking out years to make a run, and she handed me this one and said she didn't want it because the penny was scratched. I looked more carefully and it doesn't look like a scratch. At the time I put a little post it on the box of the set that said "penny die crack" and just found it again today when going through things to show here. I took 2 pictures as best I could, tbh I think to get better pics to post I would have to crack open the mint container.

I still remember telling her at the time that it isn't possible the die was cracked, because the process of making proofs was different, like higher quality controls. Any thoughts on what it looks like?

It's a Gas Bubble (Linear Plating Bubble) from contaminates getting in the plating mix.

It's a plating issue. Still unacceptable on a proof, in my opinion.

That shouldn't even happen on a proof coin. Poor Mint quality control is what I call it. Horrid quality for a proof, but that's the U.S. Mint's fault.

Since I don't recall ever seeing any NGC coins with "inept mint employees" on the label I won't rush out to have it slabbed then lol.

To be fair, it may have developed after the coin was inserted into the proof set lens by the Mint. It's trapped corrosion gas caused by debris between the zinc core and copper plating.

Unfortunate, but true.
