This coin was purchased from France. I'm not sure what it is..
During the cleaning, I noticed a second face on the obverse.
A Roman 4th century portrait at 1 o'clock.
Obv: Merovingian style portrait right with Christian long cross right.
Rev: Cross ancree,
On both sides traces of gold plating
Mass: 2.34 gram
Diameter: 17mm

You do post some tough-to-identify coins.

Interesting coin, I think the reverse is upside down. VK is good with these types hopefully he will be along to see this.

Because it is a purchase I always keep in mind it can be a modern fake. But in this case I'm just not sure what it is

Hi.

I believe this is a Merovingian denier which is closely associated with Series G sceattas. They iconography is shared on the obverse with a bust facing a cross. However, none of the ones I have looked at had gold plating. This could be a contemporary pseudo-coin intended for ornamentation.
All references I have are English but check them out.
Portable Antiquities scheme at http://www.finds.org.uk/database Ref. SWYOR-B16336 and Ref. FAJN-93DC39
Early Medieval Coin Corpus at emc.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk Ref. 1996.0061

Hope this helps if you still have the coin. Would be interested to know what you think.
