A major takeaway...

This is the longest US series of coins with the same composition and denomination. 5.00g, 75% Copper, 25% Nickel since 1865...

Silver coin weight standards were changed several times (except for the dollar) but are no longer made.

The 1865 cent is now copper plated zinc.

If you wanted to (please don't), that 1865 Nickel would be accepted happily by a coin-operated vending machine!

Depositing a nice old nickel in a Coinstar would be a nice present for someone. Like a message in a bottle.

Should I buy a proof set of Westward Bound nickels or just find them in pocket change?

No Half Dime for you. Finish your nickel type set first. Where is your 3 c nickel?

I would do the Half Dimes first.

I would go with:

1 capped bust Half Dime
1 No Stars liberty Seated half dime
1 with stars liberty Seated half dime
1 liberty Seated half dime with arrows
1 liberty Seated half dime with legend on obverse
