To my eye, the low relief of the Long Island makes it appear circulated even when in MS.

The 1936 Long Island half is a rare exception to the 'commemorative craze' era of coins issued in that it is generally available in the market in circulated state.

What is the deal with our lack of cannon? Don't tell me we are nothing more than an old fashioned Greyhound.

I WANT CANNON!

We're going to need to trust in God—it doesn't look like we have a captain or a crew either.

I assumed (likely correct) that we would not have many entries for today's 1903 gold dollar celebrating the centennial of the Louisiana purchase ... a transition with France and Napoleon that doubled the size of the then 1803 USA for a mere $30 million.

It's great history ... but we are about the coins ... so in hopes of filling the void from CCF member sets ... I offer the following images ... not mine but photo grabs from the internet.

Two gold coins issued, the first ever gold commemorative ... each with the same reverse.

Two presidents honored on the obverse ... Jefferson and McKinley.

To the obverses ..

Hopeful this post fills the void as we quest toward a complete set of USA commemorative.

Thank you for the grabs. I'm afraid the gold has never been of much interest. I have many $1 Gold, so I'm not against them, but they don't ring my bell.
