The 1936 commemorative half dollar for the 300th Anniversary of York County, Maine attains its membership in the "Animal Kingdom Coin Club" via the horse that is seen on the coin's obverse (per the US Mint). A man is shown riding a horse outside of Brown's Garrison, the protective stockade built in the early 1700s in present-day Saco, York County, Maine. (For more about Brown's Garrison, see the "Quick Bits" link below.) The coin was designed by Maine-artist Walter Herbert Rich (1866-1948). 1936 York County, ME Tercentenary Half Dollar For more information about the York County coin and its original holder/mailer, have a look at: - 1936 York County Tercentenary- 1936 York County Tercentenary - Revisited- York County Tercentenary - Quick Bits- 1936 York County Half Dollar - Places. The reverse of the 1935 Hudson, NY Sesquicentennial half dollar has one of the strongest mythology-based themes of all the coins within the classic-era US commemorative series. The design includes Neptune, the Roman god of the sea (and freshwater) - counterpart to the Greek god Poseidon - shown holding a trident and riding a whale; a mermaid is presented in the background depicted blowing into a conch shell. (Note: The US Mint considers the Seal/Neptune side to be the coin's reverse.)The somewhat unusual/whimsical design is the work of Chester Beach and is said to be based on the then-current Seal of Hudson, NY. I've always wondered why Neptune is depicted riding "whaleback" in a reversed position? I'm used to seeing something more along the lines of this painting by John Singleton Copley from 1754: (Image Credit: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Open Access image. Public Domain.)But, either way, the whale included in the design isn't a myth and qualifies this one as an "animal coin." 1935 Hudson, NY Sesquicentennial You can see my previous posts about the Hudon half dollar here: 1935 Hudson, NY 150th Anniversary.
