Picked this one up from a Stack's/Bowers auction the other night, still waiting for it to arrive. A bit of a different animal on this Conder token.

Thanks IGE! I thought it was pretty cool myself. Just arrived at the house today, though they tried to deliver it on Friday the first time, just have not been at home to sign for it until now. It's nicer in hand than the photo shows.

Just came across triggermob's beaver posted a few weeks ago and that's inspired me to dig up and share one of my own, but from 200+ years ago.
I pasted this into the "Coats Of Arms, Shields, Crests, Crowns" first, but I'm figuring the subject and content are appropriate for both there and here among you animals.

So...

A few wavy lines and a benign-looking beaver make this a very simple crest bearing the arms of Beverley, in Yorkshire. The legends pretty much tell the whole story:

THE BEVERLEY NEW FRIENDLY SOCIETY - ESTABLISHED 1789

THOMAS LECK FATHER - THREE PENNY TOKEN - 1813

For the quick benefit of all of us non-UK forum members, "Friendly Societies" are concisely defined and described by the current-day Sheperds Friendly Society here on their website. I'll paste in this brief excerpt to summarize: "[By] the end of the nineteenth century, friendly societies provided most insurance, benefits, and pensions across the UK."

Unfortunately, however, the story of Thomas Leck -- or maybe his name was Thomas Leck Father -- appears to be lost in the mists of time.

1813 3d of Beverley, Yorkshire: 39mm. 27.8g. Davis 79; Withers BCT 30; Withers T&P 2038; D&W 108/64. RR. The condition of my specimen, shown here, is typical for this token, so the handful of survivors that have made it to the collector's market must have circulated freely during the "small change" shortages that Britain experienced during the last ten years of George III's reign.
