US 25 Cents 2020-P: American Samoa (courtesy of the local Coinstar!). The Samoan Fruit Bat ( Pteropus samoensis; pe'a vao in Samoan) has a wingspan of about a meter. Also known as flying foxes, they are important to forest ecosystems because they are pollinators and disperse seeds. They also have a very rich aroma (personal experience). Thank you, Dearborn and GLB! Quote: (so you are saying that Bats stink, huh?) Fruit bats have a distinctive "musky" smell. I've never "smelled" bats in the US, except for colonies of Mexican free-tailed bats. They are not especially pleasant due to accumulations of wastes and dead bats.
