As threatened, my loving wife got me a QX5 for Christmas. Here's the results of my first trial - note I've not even read the manual nor made any adjustmets yet. Pictured is a rather drmatically-cracked 1887 Morgan, almost completely circled obverse and reverse.

The microscope is completely USB-powered. I believe there'll be a little trouble with light control, but we'll work on that. Focus is okay, considering the depth of field at magnification. Whenever I start the control program, it rewrites my video settings to 640x480@60Hz, and doesn't give back the refresh rate when I exit. That's an annoyance, because I can't stand the 60Hz flicker.

However, I'm happy. We'll find those VAMs now. :)

The QX5 is what I look for VAMs with. Nice photos.

G'day SuperDave, I have been considering buying a QX5 for while now but have been hanging off for some deeper info. I would appreciate any feedback you can give on this microscope. But from the pictures it looks great, as you said, the lighting is the only problem. I look forward to more pictures.

Thanks

Well, I'm pretty irritated with the thing lowering my refresh rate every time I start the software. Further, since installing the microscope I'm having problems with my laser printer not being detected. The USB implementation on my motherboard, an Asus A7N8X-E, is suspect (it won't run a wireless USB network adapter), but the printer hasn't given me much trouble before this.

It must be said that I'm running 9 USB devices off this motherboard, so I may need to play with what plugs where to get power issues sorted out.

The jury is still out on the QX5. I don't care for the hardware issues, but functionally it's just what I wanted.

The pics are very nice......this is "ER" of "AMERICA," unretouched:

Here's the coin in question - note the great die cracks:

Your light levels are low, there should be an icon that looks like a sliding bar on the right side of your screen. I have the QX3, but it should be similar. I keep the light about half way, but I have a desk lamp right over it, which may effect it.

Yep, it looks like if you get a little more light in there, they will really be good!
