This one had me stumped for the longest time, but I think I finally cracked it!

Cyprus, Paphos
Pnytos II (Pnytagoras?)
5th-4th century BC
AR Hemiobol? 7mm, 0.36g

Head of bull right
Eagle standing left; symbols and/or legend to left, olive-spray above right

Unpublished, perhaps the second known?

Cyprus---AR-Hemiobol-Of-Pnytas-II,-Paphos-Mint

I could only find one other example on any database; this example from a Spink sale in 2015:

It's a shame that the legend is not clear, as Cypriot is a very rare writing system on coinage, and not one I am likely to be able to afford for my collection of dead languages. I really like the rendition of the eagle on such a small coin at any rate!

Congrats for both acquiring the rarity and managing to i.d. it, Steve. Well done on both accounts.

Thanks Bob!

One thing I have found shocking from these various lots is that it seems many/most of these small Greek silvers are scarce or rare; but unlike genuine rarities in the Roman numismatic world, an "R4, 2-5 known" Greek fraction will often struggle to sell for its minimum bid at auction, unless it's from a "rockstar" series that everyone collects. Very interesting stuff!

Same seems to sometimes hold true for Parthian fractions...Not all that much collector interest. I will be doing what I can to change that.
