hey everyone, I recently purchased this unique old coin (ring added to make it into a pendant..) that was purchased in India. I would like to know more about it. I believe that the symbols are Persian/Arabic, and that the reverse y and "9" are numbers etc, also the big J. not sure what the tree or fish looking symbols mean as I have not seen those before. It's the size of a nickel..weights more, I assume it's a higher content silver but am not sure. Any ideas? origin? content?

Thanks!

OK, I found it. Took a bit of searching...

It's from the Indian princely state of Awadh, which was located in what is now Uttar Pradesh state. If it's "the size of a nickel" (and I had to go and get my North America album out to find out how big a "nickel" is ) it'll be a rupee.

The crayfish, star, tree-branch and backwards-P-shaped flag all indicate the mint-city is Lucknow. The date is 1233 Islamic Calendar, equating to 1818 AD. The number "26" on the reverse is largely meaningless, copied from earlier coins which used to show the regnal years of the Mughal emperor.

Your pic of the obverse appears to be back to front; I believe this should be the right way around:

It's listed in the Krause catalogue as KM# 103.2. The coin catalogues for only a few dollars in low grades; with the loop attached like that, I would assume it's only worth bullion. The catalogue doesn't give a silver fineness; presumably it varied quite a bit, but wouldn't be too far away from 90% silver. The weight varies, too, with a range of 10.7 to 11.6 grams given.

Thanks for your time in searching on this! It's nice to know some history behind it and how old it is. The back of the coin seems to be inverted? perhaps the back of the stamp used was not correct. When I bought this one there was a larger version (about 50% bigger) that had similar symbols, I didn't happen to compare the back of the coins though.

Thanks again for looking this up!
