This is a nice historical medal that was given to people who donated their gold for the German war effort.....The woman on front Kinda looks like Popeyes Girlfriend Olive Oyl

The reverse translates to "Gold I gave for Defense, Iron I took in Honor"
German-1916-Medal-Token

The obverse says "In Iron Times, 1916"

G'day, it's been more than a decade since I visited the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, but the translation rings a loud bell with me. I suspect I have seen some item with that legend, but I can't recall details.
From what I have read, your interpretation is quite correct.

Yes, your translation rings true to me, as well as the resemblance to Olive Oyl, lol.
I did not realize individuals were tapped to fund that war, but it helps explain post-war resentment towards reparations.
