Hello, I have this 1873 Newfoundland 50 Cent coin. The C in Cents appears to be closed. There are many knowledgeable collectors here on CCF. Some members here have more knowledge about Newfoundland coins than others. Does anyone know of this error for this particular coin?

That is normal for the earlier years.
I think that it wasn't until sometime in the 1880's that
the "C" was opened up.

Did you notice the repunched T in CENTS? That's the variety for the coin you have.

@canadianvarieties Thank you for spotting that. I hadn't noticed but I was very focused on the closed C.
@papeldog I didn't know that a closed C was common for those years. But I'm just learning. Indeed there are knowledgeable people here on CCF.

I'm still doing research on these, but so far it appears that this variety (T/T in CENTS) shows up in 1/3 of the 1873s.

Also look for the repunched G in REGINA variety for the 1873s, which is scarcer...
