Been wanting to pick up this reverse type for a while and have looked at sooooo many coins now that I've become 'Orodes blind'!
Seller had this one as Orodes II and nothing else...could someone check my attribution?
If it is Orodes II what's the difference between the 2 rulers portrait?

Elymais
Orodes III, 2nd Century A.D., AE Drachm

Obv: Bearded bust facing left, wearing a diademed tiara ornamented with anchor. Pellet and crescent above an anchor to the right.
Rev: Radiate and draped bust of Artemis right. Greek legend around bust

Weight: 3.5 grams

van't Haaff 16.1.1-1

Thanks Paul

Great example of the type, Paul. Congratulations. Your patience paid off.

It is a van't Haaff 16.1.1-3A due to the retrograde reverse legends.

Yes, it's Orodes III (using van't Haaff's attribution). The fundamental difference in the obverse busts of II and III is in the tiara. II's tiara has an upward-facing crescent, like a bowl, with a pellet in it (think Fred Flintstone's Water Buffalo Lodge hat); whereas III's tiara, like yours, has an anchor - essentially a small repeat of the Elymaean anchor motif in the right field.

Very nice!

I have always given myself a headache trying to figure out the legend on these... I see BACI-HIΔW .... trying for ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΟΡΗΔΩΣ perhaps?

Thanks guys!

@Bob..Thanks for the attribution and will have the difference between the two rulers 'tatooed'on my forearm for future reference..
I see now its the same type as your lead-in photo on your pdf file..

Is the legend actually decipherible? Seem to remember reading somewhere it translated to 'king Orodes son of Orodes'?

Paul and Steve, it's Greek for King Orodes, but is shortened and butchered by the Elymaean die engravers - typical treatment for Greek legends in this period in their history.

Pics from van't Haaff below.

I see, Paul, that the "Elymais" folder in your Forum gallery only has this one occupant so far. He's obviously outnumbered by your Lucinius folles, Gadhaiya paisas/drachms, and such, each with their own folders.

I hope you'll be addressing that shortage in the coming months. I'm very encouraged by the fact that you didn't relegate this coin to your "MIX" folder. The fact that you have a stand-alone Elymais folder implies that there are more to come.

Looking forward to more nice examples like this one.
