I have an 1863 Indian Head cent that is in about AU condition, but what scares me about the coin is the thickness. It is slightly thicker than a modern day nickle. Is this possible that a cent from 1863 could be this thick?

Yes. The copper-nickel Indian cents are much thicker than their bronze counterparts.

I never knew about copper-nickle IHC. I always say if you don't learn something new every day you might as well be dead. Thanks for the info.... I always wondered if that coin was real or not. I've had it for over 30 years, not sure why I just started thinking about it again.

Teach > you need to get yourself the latest Red Book ( A guide to U.S. coins ). It's a very good reference for all U.S. coins .
