I cruze a lot of auctions for a variety of different venues. I've just come across a group of lots of what looks like really trash junk to my novice eye. Are these even worth a low bid or is it just a waste of time? Would there be any hidden jewels under any crud or are these as identifiable as they will ever get? A few pointers might help me here. Thanks guys.

It looks liked they have already been washed and checked for any detail. The only thing I see are culls with little or no detail, save your money nothing there but junk.

Complete junk, no value. I would only buy them for a few cents each to give to some kids.

This is the 3rd year that I'm doing a coin cleaning project with my students. The first year, I went the cheap way and they looked like the ones in this lot. They are mostly slugs and not worth the time. In fact, you can be assured that most (if not all) lots, the seller has cherry picked the best coins. Although, they might leave a beat up denarius for effect.

My advice is to buy a quality uncleaned lot. Again don't expect to find a bunch of great finds. Although, you should be able to get at least a few really great examples. Basically, buy for the fun of cleaning the coins and not for a treasure hunt.

This is my current lot that I bought for my students. I would consider a quality lot. You can see some detail before they are even cleaned. I'd pay about $1 to $3 per coin.

That's a nice lot, I would call it medium quality. The coins will clean up nicely and have some nice detail. If I were still into LRB coins I would buy a lot like this.

That is a nice lot.. Travelcoin, seeing that you have some experience purchasing these lots do you have a preferred seller or sellers?

I don't have a preferred seller yet. I wasn't that satisfied with the first two. The first one, I overpaid. But I made a rookie mistake: NEVER buy a lot from a stock photo. Buy or bid on the actual coins in the photos. It wasn't an auction site and it was from a seller with a website who specializes in uncleaned ancients.

The second was a cheap lot from ebay so I wasn't expecting much. The coins in this lot are still uncleaned, so I don't feel confident in recommending them that. However, I did buy them from an experienced seller on ebay. Just search uncleaned Roman lots, you will probably see similar photos and figure out the seller. I also bid on a lot from a seller from London. I really just examine the coins and then bid I'm happy with about 2-2.50 per coin. If you see some silvers (and some add them) maybe bid a bit more.

Resources I used about cleaning:

I like this one the best - easy to read and follow:

Good Luck!
