Hello All!

I am an antique dealer who mainly focuses on jewelry, but I get some neat coins here and there. I recently got this incredible box with old coins all over it, which date from the early 1800s to the latest coins of 1935. I noticed there are quite a few Chinese coins on this box....and I know some of them can be very valuable, so I wanted to have other people look at them before I went and undersold it. Most of the coins have nails through them with an interesting steampunk look to it, but the Asian coins already have a hole in the center so they could be salvageable if need be. I'm far from an expert so if anyone can help point out any decent coins please let me know! Thank you all so very much. -Eric

I would leave them be; I don't see any that would be worth salvaging, and the nuts probably scratched or otherwise damaged the inner rim anyway. Even in VF condition, very few Qing dynasty cash are worth more than about 50 cents. The two cast cash on the front side are Qianlong, 1735-96 and are worthless with any kind of damage. The machine struck on the top are mostly Guangxu from about the 1870s/80s and aren't worth much either.

Of all the coins on the box, the Canadian tokens would be worth the most, but not much with those holes.

The French 10 centimes have holes in the center, but even uncirculated examples of those are barely worth anything.

I wish I knew what coins seem to have already been removed, though!

Thank you so very much Finn, I'm so glad I came to this forum! I figured none of them were worth anything, I just saw similar looking brass/copper Chinese coins on ebay with what I thought was similar Chinese characters selling for over $500, so I just had to make sure. I'm actually wondering if someone already took some coins off this box as well now that you say it, I thought it was pretty symmetrical but there are some bolts with no coins. It really makes for a cool looking box, so it will be a great display piece! Thanks again :)

Definitely leave it as is. No rare or valuable coins showing.
I like old boxes and would be a bidder if that thing or something similar came up at a local sale. I have seen more elaborate old containers and chests adorned with coins, glass beads, semi-precious polished stones and fancy wire filigree. Seems to have been a 'thing' at one point in time.

That's pretty neat. That would be great candidate for a 'treasure chest' box to put common circulated silver coins in.

That's actually a great idea, I might just do that for a while until I decide to sell it! I'm actually shocked I picked it up at an auction for 5 bucks...I don't think anyone saw it! Thanks for all the help!

$5 is certainly a good deal. Interesting box and a definite conversation starter.
