Here's my situation, I have acquired a large cache of LMC pennies that have not seen the light of day 30 yrs.
All have been stored in varies coin purses, sorted only by decade.
So my questions:
What are the do's & don't?
Will the copper darken exposed to air & light after such a long time?

I'm itching to begin looking but I stopped.
I thought it would be best to seek your advice beforehand. eagerly awaiting the benefit of your wisdom OH Wiseones

Hi. I'm quite new to coin collecting too so all I can suggest is put down a cloth to rest the coins on, use cotton glove and enjoy :)

Just start looking for collectables. If you're really concerned about quality, put on gloves and put a cloth down where you'll be searching (so coins don't hit the surface forcefully). If you find one that is rare or you want to keep in nice condition, just purchase a coin holder and put it in. Personally I wouldn't worry too much unless you have anything pre-1940. If you do, put em in a coin holder. They're pretty cheap and you can buy them online from Amazon.com

With all the above. Go buy a Charlton book and catalog each coin one by one. I am sure you will have doubles a triples. The ones that have some value, I would inspect for condition.

The put them in a folding cardboard holder. If there is some you think is a significant value, post the pic on here and we will confirm or shed some light on what exactly it is.

If everything still looks good. I would spend the money to get it certified by PSGS and them you could keep it or sell it.

Good luck

I would say get a book for keeping the best examples from each year/mint. Also either get a Red Book or maybe someone here can post a list for the years with common errors or other interesting key dates and whatnots to look for.

I agree with you getting a copy of the Red Book by Whitman Publishing. There are many web sites that list coins by dates but so much better to sit there and just flip a page or two in a book.
