Hi all,
I'm not a coin collector but didn't know where to go to ask any questions?!
I found an unusual penny in my change - it's the same size as a normal penny but it's silver coloured? Doesn't seem to be any heavier than a regular penny but it's almost like it hasn't been plated in the normal coppery finish?
Didn't know what to do with it so thought I would ask on here.
Thanks for reading!

Looks to have been plated with something.

It's really difficult to get a good picture - how would I test to see what metal/playing it is?

Hello and !

British pennies made after 1992 are normally of bronze-clad steel, so I suppose technically you could find one struck on a steel blank that hasn't been plated. But I think this one has been tampered with since it left the mint.

Difficult to tell, and I haven't done any experimentation to confirm, but my guess (!) would be that it's a normal penny that has had the copper plating removed, presumably by a brief immersion in something corrosive. Maybe someone tried the old "coin in coca-cola" trick. You'd have to take the coin out of the acid once the copper was gone, otherwise the steel would react quickly. You'd also need to rinse it thoroughly to prevent rust from forming.

Are you sure that's not a 5 pence? I have a 2001 5 pence and it's silver and about the size of a penny. What's on the back?
