Does anyone know how I can take an image of a fine silver coin without reflecting so much light as to no longer be able to determine the image on the coin? Thanks.

You need diffused lighting and proper angles of the light(s) and camera.

I used several different digital cameras, and the results are always difficult to produce a good image hat is not too dull, and can also be distinguished more than a bright spot.

Take a piece of paper, preferably thin vellum, opalux, etc but a light printer paper is OK a well.

Cut a 4"x4" square or circle out of it.

Cut a hole in the middle big enough to barely fit snugly over the end of your lens

Push the lens through the hole

Shine your lights onto the paper from above

Closer = less diffusion

Farther = more diffusion

Ray's tips above about diffusion at the lens are key. If you have not tried them, try them. It will be well worth your time!

I find you need to use a point light to get luster bands, but when you do you lose the ability to correct the brightness without getting harsh, overwhelming highlights. I understand why Heritage photographs all their coins to have no luster bands and they all look flat and dead.
