I got this as an uncleaned coin which cleaned up nice, but I'm unsure about the reverse. I think I can read PROV? AVGG, but I can't find any other examples to compare it with. What do you think?

Hi Michael.

Outside my area of collecting. I've seen this type for Septimius Severus but not for Julia Domna. I'm wondering if this is some sort of mule or ancient imitation. Curious what others think.

Here's a fouree counterfeit of "her hybrid issue" - perhaps a fancy way of saying "mule" (?) - with an RIC reference: https://finds.org.uk/database/artef...rd/id/266463

The irregular flan the fact that at least one is fouree and the "different" looking portraits on both make me think it may be from an unofficial mint.
Nice to find the unusual things.
Makes it a real keeper

RIC mentions : Hybrids : probably in the main ancient forgeries , a few may be barberous imitations , for RIC602 :reverse of Septimius Severus .I think the coin has been struck with official stolen (?) dies , if it is hybrid as RIC says .Question is why RIC means it is hybrid , as Iulia Domna was Septimius Severus'wife .albert

The reverse certainly looks "official" while the obverse portrait has a certain 'old crone' look about her. The Severan women were never portrayed in an extraordinarily flattering way (few women were !) but this one looks particularly aged.
Hybrid is just a fancy word for mule. Perhaps the RIC authors felt it a more appropriate term for numismatics.
