I think all countries are collected in general. Probably England, France and Germany/German States most, because of their history. You must remember that coinage is a look back at history. That is their appeal to me. I relate the coins to the events of the time.
So my problem is I like 'em all.

I would say without a doubt British Coins are most collected for beauty and Historical reasons withing europe. What facinates me most when I add a coin to my collection especially if its well worn is, "I wonder how many people have touched this coin" Its really facinating with old Hammered coins and pre Victorian coins.

I think it all depends on what the collector likes, I concentrate on coins from the German States. Though my collection covers all the other countries also.

Yes, I think people generally find a focus and collect those--or they simply begin with a random collection and work from there.
Collecting is hardly deliberate for me, as I have some 18c. UK coins, Iceland, and Finland commemoratives. Poland makes some very nice commemoratives too which I may someday collect.

Guys,
I think there are 3 countries in Europe having supremacy in coins collecing:
- Vatican City, so many people in the world collect coins from Pope state;
- Greece and Italy, one of the origins of the coins are Greece and Romans
I know I'm Italian, sorry for Germany, UK and France but the history talk ...

A lot of people across the world collect UK coins because of past colonization.
Similar I suppose to interest in coins of the Roman Empire. The Brits tried their hand at what the Romans did--for a far shorter period.

rosso,
I have to admit that I do posses several papel coins(Clement XI, etc) as well as some more recent stuff.
But I do tend to go through cycles of collecting.

For me, my number one European country is Great Britain, with 438 coins. It's my number two country overall, after Australia.

France is a distant second, with 159 coins (fifth overall, after the United States at #3 and Canada at #4).

As for which European coins I actually like the most, I'd have to say German and German States. If I were to total up all the German and German States coins (they're listed separately in my database), they'd easily beat the French for numbers, possibly even more than Canada.

Romania, of course! And I also like Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, Russia and the Habsburgic/Austrian Empire, mainly great powers which over time had control over various parts of Romania.

On the more traditional (older coins) side I have been working on a set of British Trade dollars. For modern I have been getting a lot of French and Polish coins - their mints have been making really excellent silver proofs (which is what I prefer). I would buy more Austrian coins as well if I could find them in my price range .
