I started coin collecting in early 80's as a kid, life happened and I stopped. I spent every cent I earned from mowing lawns, washing cars, babysitting, and anything else I could do. Unfortunately while I was away in the Marine Corps my best coins where stolen (Roman silver / US gold and silver)from my parents house.

I recently renewed my interest and started collecting again. My interest are all over the place but ancient coins have always piqued my imagination. I have some common Roman coins inherited from my grandfather. He got those coins while stationed in Lybia in the early 1950s. My wife bought me a nice Maximinus denarius for Christmas. While in Hungary my wife bought me a Istvan I denar.

Looking forward to learning from you guys as I go down the ancient coin rabbit hole.

I fell down the ancient coin rabbit hole about 2.5 years ago and since have dabbled in nearly every field that can be collected for less than $100. There's a bunch of us on here, most of whom like to dabble while focusing on a couple areas. We've got just about every nook and cranny of the ancient world covered, so feel free to ask, share, and learn!

Collecting ancient coins is like holding a bit of history in your hands.

There is a sticky section here titled Books, downloads, and websites. I highly recommend you check it out. There is a wealth of information there that will help you learn about ancient coins.

Canefan, to the forum!

I can mostly echo your story, started as a kid, life happened(even USMC, Semper FI!), lost all childhood coins, started "recollecting" and down the hole of ancients just this past winter. So on the learning path as well. Have fun!

Thanks all for warm reception!

Any ideas in what areas you will collect?

I was thinking of a twelve Caesars. As I said I am all over the map when it comes to coins.

Can't go wrong with a 12 Caesars set

IMO, for a beginner, I think either the Nerva-Antoninus (Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, Lucius Verus, Marcus Aurelius, Commodus) or Constantine dynasty would be more rewarding... you can get the entire Constantine family in bronze in XF for the price of a mid-grade Otho.

I started off with some nice Licinius ae's...Learnt how to read the legends...
and then how to attribute my own coins using the sticky section here and the expertise of the pro's here on the forum..
When I felt more confident I then started buying some denarius of the 5 good emperors etc etc.. and so it moved on...
As the forums logo depicts...'Education is the key to collector success'..Then buy some coins and you'll really enjoy them!

A twelve Caesar set is good start, though can get expensive in silver especially Tiberius, Caligula and a few others. In bronze not so bad. I think most new collectors start with Roman coinage simply because we tend to know more about the Roman empire than other empires, and Roman coins are plentiful and inexpensive especially the later bronzes. I started that way but soon learned that there are more ancient empires that struck coins than you can be imagined.

This is a wonderful hobby enjoy it, visit us often and ask questions.

Glad to have you here.

For me, the most important piece of advice I ever received was to have fun.

Do some reading find out what you like and then buy some coins. If you need anything, there are plenty of people here willing to help.

As for the 12 Caesars...
