cheungsta Valued Member United States 271 Posts	Posted 06/11/2008 12:46 am I purchased a couple of those "uncleaned coin lots" from ebay a while back, and I had a heck of a time trying to get them clean...so I just dumped all 20 into a glass with plenty of mineral oil and left it for a couple months to try and soften up the dirt. about a week ago, I tried again to get the build-up / dirt off, and only some of it came off, but not enough to really identify anything... Any ideas on what else would work? Should I just clean the oil off and try some peroxide? I really want to try and get them clean enough to try and identify some or alteast see some features. and one of the coins is pretty heavy, so I think it may be silver...keeping my fingers crossed Report this Post to the Staff

SpringCypress Pillar of the Community United States 666 Posts	Posted 06/11/2008 01:07 am After having been soaked in oil, H2O2 is probably not going to work as the oil will have soaked into the pores. I might try soaking them for a while in a distilled water and light soap (something like dawn) mixture, switching out the solution every week or so and letting it run for at least a couple of months. The soaking can't do anything but help and the dawn might break down the mineral oil. If the oil can be removed then I'd try H2O2. This thread goes into pretty good detail on using peroxide. With ancients I don't think I'd try electrolysis except as a last ditch effort. Report this Post to the Staff
