This forum is the closest for my question. Should one clean a gold nuggets, it's a really nice large piece but has a bit of dirt and/or iron. What would be the best way to clean it be? It's an 8.5 gram nugget, very newly acquired from auction :)

I would soak in water for a while, then rinse.

Don't clean it. Original raw gold nuggets should not be messed with unless they are 1/2 z. Or better and have debris that hides significant parts.

Just to wash off the dirt, I'll give it a light soak in water. And no serious cleaning Mocking, thanks you guys for the great advice.

An ultrasonic bath should remove any loose material, but keep the original patina on the gold surface...

The most attractve one I have is an 9 gram from dry diggings in the Trinity. Thousands of years ago it was shiny in a stream bed. Now it's dusty and dull looking.

Nuggets with quartz inclusions and sand imbeds are attractive too. Even if a piece is genuine, it's not appealing to me if it looks like yellow egg yolk splatter on a countertop.
