Tails on both ends, I consider opening this at least once a week. Looking for thoughts on leaving it as is and cracking it to see what's in it.

I would only crack it if I had a plan in place, that I liked, for what to do with the coins regardless of what I find.

For example, if the roll brought me sentimental enjoyment, I'd have plans on keeping the wrapper, most of the coins in an album, and if there is a "seller" or two in the roll, then you still have the rest.

With a plan in place you can avoid any cracker's remorse.
Rest in Peace

the chances of their being a valuable coin in the roll is almost infinitesimal. I'd keep it in a glass case that I could look at and enjoy it with the memories that the roll conjures.

I am always inclined to open a roll to look inside, but this is not a decision to be made in haste. Was she intent on keeping it intact or was opening it something she never got around to doing? Or perhaps it was something she rolled herself after examination?

I would just leave the roll intact if it were me.
I still have my mom, but she lives several states away and has dementia.
Before she got so ill, she mailed me a few coins she had kept through
the years because she knew I collected them and "wanted me to have them."
They are still in the little box she mailed and I left them just the way
I received them so when my son inherits my collection he will know those
were from his granny. I know there are no coins inside with any significant
value because she had shown them to me a few times over the years but to
me they are priceless.

Very nice, Debrajc!

My grandfather gave me his 1922 Peace dollar before he passed away. His mother gave it to him (he was born in 1922) and he even kept it in a belt buckle for a very long time. When he gave it to me he put it in a small cardboard jewelry box (the kind for earrings) along with his ruptured duck. I keep both in that same box to this day (thirteen years now). The box has created some nice toning to obscure some of the scratches and cleaning from the buckle and pocket days.

My mother worked for many years as a cashier and kept everything interesting she found in her drawer. Wheaties by the thousands, buffalo and "V" nickels, everything silver, silver certificates, foreign and abused coins. This is the only roll of anything she saved but I think it was on a whim in 1979 when the small dollars came out. After typing that it makes sense for me to keep it intact as it was the only roll she saved. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts, I truly appreciate them.

Are there very many valuable 79 SBA coins to hunt for? I mean I'm sure there are errors, but I don't know much about these personally. Only something about wide or narrow boarder varieties.

What kind of roll is it? Does it say Federal Reserve on it? I have a Fed Reserve roll, showing 1979p on each end and am also very intrigued to see if wide rims would be mixed in. Def let us know if you end up opening it. Sorry to hear about your mom.
