Hi Everyone-
I recently bought 4 Cap and Ray 8 Reales from Heritage Auctions.
Since I was buying from HA, it never even occurred to me that I could be buying counterfeits. I think I learned a lesson.
If anyone can offer any opinions on these based on these pictures, the widths, and the weights, I'd be very thankful:
1870: 27.0g, 37.1mm
1875: 27.1g, 38.7mm
1883: 27.0g, 38.3mm
1886: 26.8g, 37.9mm
The thing that struck me the most was how small the 1870 was. Does anyone know how much variance there might be in authentic examples? I can't find anything on that anywhere I researched.
Under a loupe, the 1886 looks a little suspicious too. It's hard to show in pictures, but some of the letters and numbers have the "dripping" look I associate in my mind with casting. But I don't know enough to be sure.
