Over the last several years I have been putting together a complete set of $2 coins (toonies) including specimen, proof, and the few gold varieties. I store the coins in 2x2 flips and then in vinyl 2x2 Dansco pages in a Dansco slip-cased album. I like the way the coins look in the album and they are all in one place and easily viewable.

Being close to completion, I recently acquired the 1999 Nunavut "mule" coin to add to the collection. The coin came as part of the entire 1999 Special Edition Uncirculated Set which contains the $2 Nunavut commemorative coin.

My question is: should I cut open the RCM sealed package removing the "mule" coin and place it in a 2x2 and subsequently in my album? Will this reduce the value of the coin?

I'm inclined to remove the coin and place it in the album for the following reasons:
It will become an integral part of my collection and album where I can view it as well as the other coins in my toonie collection.
I purchased the set at a decent price. On occasion I've seen just the individual coin sell for more than what I paid for the set.

With all other sealed sets I've purchased, I removed the coins to place them in various albums. However, these sets were significantly less in cost. The only reason I'm asking about this coin and set is its uniqueness. Charlton shows a slight increase in value for the set versus the individual coin.

Id like to hear what other CCF members think.

from a pure value perspective , I would leave the set intact. Provenance speaks volumes..you can buy the plastic sheet that holds 2 sets, and put that in the same folder.
Rest in Peace

Intact. It can always be torn apart but never returned to its original holder.

These are more common than the 1973 Large Bust PL 25c set... go ahead, cut it out and put it where you want it. It is your collection after all..

There are so many of these, that the value is not really diminished whether it is retained in the set, in your album or in a third party grading slab.

Thanks for everyone's input on this. For the time being I'll keep the set intact but may ultimately break it open.

The coin will be judged on it's own attributes, regardless of whether it's in a set of not. I wouldn't hesitate to cut it out, as I have done it in the past (one came back a 66 grade, the other a 67).
