I started a BU Jeff nickel set awhile back but didn't fill it actively. Recently I've been looking to fill the album. I've noticed some years have a mushy reverse. Is this common to certain years? If it is does anyone know which years they are? Because if its just a weak strike on some of the coins, I'll rather hold off till I get a good strike.
Thanks!

Yes, you can get BU Jeffersons that have no steps showing and Monticello looks like melted ice cream. There are a couple of detailed books out there that give all this info - which years had good strikes, etc. The most famous one has what looks like a drawing of a staircase on the front cover. <I don't own nay of them.>
However, I do know that well-struck reverses command a premium - and a very large one for certain years.
In fact, that's kind of neat. It's one of the few series where the condition of the reverse is arguable much more important than that of the obverse.

Thanks Kabiye_Lady. That's what I wanted to find out, whether I should hold off for the good strike or if this is the norm for this year might as well buy it. I'm thinking maybe I should buy the Red Book series of the Jefferson/Buffalo nickel book. Anyone have any feedback on this book?

that 46 is a worn die. the years I have found to be bad rev are 58 46 64 some only 71 is not a good year either. I know there are a few more but these are some of the worst I have seen with 58 being the worst. I am short 21 coins from having a ms-64-69 Jefferson and the only reason they are missing is because of them years with the bad rev strikes. I am waiting for the perfect coin. I am only 50 and have been working on the set for a few years and hopefully I have a few years left to Finnish it. but when done it will be hard to match

Thanks, I'm making a note of the years being mentioned. I'm thinking I should get hold of a ref book but not sure which one.

The ones where full step examples go for a lot are going to be mostly mushy.

I too was wondering about that book. Might be just another messed up one by Whitman attempting to make money. If you find one and it is any good, post a thing about it and if OK I'll go looking for one.
