When re-entering the childhood hobby, it became apparent that learning to grade coins was unavoidable. Barber half grading in grades AG3-AU50 seemed to be more objective than subjective, and the coins were large enough you almost didn't need a loupe. At that time VF25 and VF35 were official grades. At first, that seemed like hair splitting to me, or OCD, but then after the 'ugly design' had become quite the opposite, I could see why VF35 was introduced (still not so sure about VF25). You could get a meaty coin for a nice price break from XF That also was when they were bought/sold by dealers off the Gray sheet. OK enough gab, what do you think?

That is a beautiful coin. I have been trying to learn from your posts.

Although it may be sharper, xf45 is the most I can give a coin that shows no luster in this series.

Technical Grade 55. Eye Appeal 8/10. I'm a sucker for circulation cameo and this one is exceptional. For the Barber quarter and half the wing definition on the reverse is the safest grading tool 95 times out of 100. Learn that and you can become an expert grader of those two series in no time.

Agree AU-53, and a really special example.

Thank you for the tip. This is very helpful. I have the tendency to over grade these and I will use this.

PCGS XF45
I believe this is a case where an AU coin is downgraded by PCGS graders because of the darker coloration, though a beautiful cameo effect. Luster does peak through the toning - which the scan doesn't show. XF45 can have some luster remaining, but this is as "choice" as XF comes in originality and toning pattern, without being AU.
If this coin were lightly cleaned they would give it AU. I'll show an example of this in a future post.

I think that for capped bust and earlier Seated coinage a dark coin with limited luster can slip easily into AU but not for this series. According to the ANA Sheldon scale standard, an AU50 coin must show half of the original mint luster while an XF45 coin need only have luster in protected areas with no quantification as to amount present. In this case, it seems the tpgs follow the ANA/Sheldon standard for this series whereas earlier coinage gets more of a break. Given the overwhelming abundance of cleaned 19th century U.S. coins, I agree with you that tpgs give cleaned coins a break as a [in my opinion] misguided nod to commercial considerations.
