I was getting ready to go through a bunch of lmcs I have separated from a bank box and this one just caught my eye right off the pile cause of the color. I truned it over and saw this die gouge plain as day. I'm assuming that's what it is. I post some similar ones a little ways back but they were on the rim of a shield penny. They had the same shape though. This one sticks out of the bottom of the memorial a little right of center. I'm gonna put a pic of the shield too for comparison.Check-Out-This-Die-Gouge-On-A-1981-LMC!!

On the obverse on your coin, that's actually a Die Dent (Die Damage). Here's the definition of this error and what it means. From error-ref.com:
Quote:
Definition: An area of the die is damaged by a known or unknown object, which leaves a recess in the die face. The die dent therefore appears raised on the coin.

Here's the link to Die Dent on coincommunity.com and error-ref.com.

On the reverse, it looks like a Die Chip to me. Here's the link to Die Chip.

Sorry. Your right. It was explained to me it was from possibly denting the side of the die as to the first two pics of a shield penny. I always think of gouge because it's basically damage to the die which leaves a void for metal to flow into which whether by dent or what have you, they all pretty much result in the same thing. It's pretty crazy that they both have the same shape even though they are prob caused by two different reasons. Just thought it looked cool and figured I'd share.
