See where it, ah, went to "L"? I know, bad pun! But that is the effect of the master die design itself coupled with advanced deterioration. The 1966-1968 coins were made from very worn master dies, this was changed in '69 with a newer crisper designs. Now the L, as dies age, metal movement goes outwards. This actually stretches the design elements out and makes the dies wider. They must be re-milled to make them smaller to fit the press holder. In doind this the edge is ground off and the "rim offset" (see diagram) is recut, the die face is rebeveled(rounded). This sometimes removes part of the L, here it appears to wrap up into the rim.
And the mintmark on the 1971S, there is a bgginning of a broken post inside the lower curve, outside is a contact damaged hit along the bottom.
