I was reading the post earlier on ultra sonic cleaning, and it brought a question to mind. I've seen coins advertised, especially on ebay, that have toning, and just wondered what are your thoughts on this. I've learned from reading a lot of coin collecting articles that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If it is attractive to you, then it's a good coin. What would NGC or PGS consider when grading a toned coin. I've bought some proof and mint sets, from 1955 on. Some have toning, some attractive to me, some not. (brown/grey toning) Please give me your thoughts on this. Also, I have a couple of sets where a silver coin has a black spot. I understand it's tarnish from something on the coin before packed. Would that ultrasonic cleaner remove that without doing any "cleaning damage" to the coin? Would I be better off to just leave these sets alone, and not remove them from the original mint packaging?
Thanks
Doug

I would highly recommend leaving your packaged coins alone. The only time I would recommend any type of cleaning is to remove PVC or vertigras, and only using acetone.

As you pointed out, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The top grading companies will usually ignore toning in assigning a grade unless they determine it's artificial, then it's body-bagged by PCGS and NGC. NGC will award their "coveted" star for a beautifully toned coin and you could expect to pay a premium if you wanted to buy it.

P.S. - most of those ebay coins you've seen are artificial toning and I would recommend avoiding them. Every once in awhile you will find a beautiful natural toned coin there, but it's the exception and not the rule. Do a thread search using the words "toned" or "toning" to see some examples.

Thanks for the advice Dave. I'd heard it's best to not take coins from the mint packaging, and it's good o hear again. I'll just leave those sets alone. Thanks for the answer.
