This seller, sharonandtia, is offering a replica without describing it as such.

Their words "this is a commemorative edition, re-struck from original dies" - but not THE original dies.

See https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1797-Car...263706307719 .

They also have a concoction 1921 dollar with Trump https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1921-D-U...AOSwX1Za14v5
which is "a bit of fun".

I doubt any collector buying a replica will think it a bit of fun.

Makes me wonder whether their car parts are also fake. If a fake car part leads to an accident would the seller also consider that "a bit of fun" ?
Rest in Peace

Yuck. This is the type of junk that we get asked about almost every day. Someone who inherited from their grandfather who dug it out of a brick behind the fireplace of an ancient mansion.

Fortunately, these are easy to spot as junk for anyone who's taken the time to do a few minutes research.

Their interpretation of 'original dies' I happen to think is rather 'sharp', and that the dies are original to themselves.

My strong suspicion is that the dies are of modern manufacture, and if that is the case, are of Chinese origin.

? Why else would they offer such a product for ten pounds?

There is a problem here, in that this coin could be 'laundered' by re offering it 'innocently', as a genuine coin, by an unknowing 'victim', who purchased this product.

There is a huge number of varieties in genuine 1797 Cartwheels, which would make this fraud harder to detect, by anyone who is not a specialist in this series. The pictures, in this case, are next to useless.

In now way defending the listing quoted, but be aware that sellers have a problem when trying to list copies honestly on ebay. The word "copy" is banned from the title of any coin listing! They may ban other words too, so the seller is forced to come up with expressions such as "anniversary" or "commemorative" to get the message across without breaking ebay rules.

I came across this the other day when trying to list a Barbarous Radiate - a contemporary copy of a Roman coin from the 4th or 5th century AD. ebay would not accept the listing until I removed the word "copy" from the title.

A point well worth making.
