Hi Its me again. I was hoping for a little information on the following coins. I was planning on selling them to someone in my neighborhood but don't want to either rip him or myself off. hopefully I can get some accurate grades here and maybe a little information on how the price changes when you are offer a group pf the same coins (I'm guessing it can't be called a set because it doesn't have 1944?)

thanks for all your help

Hi,
That's a nice collection! With the exception of the 1946, I have this series in various grades from VF to AU.
I've found these coins are rather tough to photograph and grade because everything hinges on small details in the portrait, such as the jewels on the crown band and hair detail. A lot of the coins have significant die lines, which are often mistaken for wear or cleaning in photos. That said, I'll take some time to look at yours more closely and comment further.

thank you for your time. I was surprised myself when I tried to photograph these little coins. the photos came out looking so washed out and gray in some instances when thats not what they really look like. I could seem to get the luster to show up properly which was driving me crazy!

so I just posted the images I had and hoped for the best possible info. I wish I had a better camera for these kinds of things. (I'm using the 7mp kodak easy share camera)

I did look up little tips online for photographing coins but half of it made no sense to me. I did a white background and side lighting but I dont know anything about white balance or anything. Any suggestions on how I might better photo these would be great.

thanks again and waiting anxiously on your opinions

I do understand how tough it is to photograph these particular coins.
These are best seen in person to be appreciated. And, even when I've bought these, I spend a lot of time scrutinizing the details under a loupe. From what I can see, I'll guess the "worst" possible grade is a VF30--but some might be as good as AU. There's really no way to say more without seeing them under a loupe. A good ballpark for value is $5-10 each, but the 1940 in AU50 would be worth around $30.
Rest in Peace

LOL It's so funny you said that Parklane! I read about people mailing things away and I just don't know how anyone can do that. To me the fear of things being ruined or lost really freaks me out. Brave people out there!

can I just ask a quick question here? I have a coin book here from last year (2007 coins of canada 25th edition) it has a 1940au valued at $50.00. Is the book I am using wrong or have the values on these gone down since last year? is the book value what I'd have to pay a dealer or is it what a dealer would pay me or what? just on a side note, I installed Coin manage software for 2008 and it doesn't have values at all for the 1940. Just a little confused as to how to assign a value if my books, software and of course people on the forums all say different values.

LOL...well I do think I'm pretty good at grading these by now, but a trusted local dealer is far preferable.
I once lost a '44 NFLD 10c in the mail to a friend--and that's a scarce coin--only 56,000 minted.

Regarding values, Charlton's and Charest don't quite agree. My 2008 Charlton's puts the 1940 AU50 at $30, AU55 at $50.
Charest lists the same coin for $20.50 in AU50 and $25.75 in AU55. I think actual market value is somewhere between the two.

A bit of good news is your 1942C appears to be the "wide date", which Charest values at $10 in AU50 (vs $7.50 for the normal version)
