Found this ebay listing and the obverse of this coin looks really weird. I can't describe it. Here's the link to it:

I agree. Extensive environmental damage - fire, chemical, or some other unnatural means.

I hadn't considered an acid dip. I've decided I would like this commemorative in my 7070. The lower, circulated grades, seem to be a little hard to come by (at least on ebay). Let the patience game begin.

They did not circulate extensively when new (although they did circulate) and as a result circulated examples below XF can be considerably more difficult to locate than MS examples!!

Fortunately, the Oregon coins were issued over a number of years, making the task a little easier than for commems which were one-year-only.
