I have a 1962 d penny that seems to have a larger stamped date over the face of the penny. Could someone please tell me if this is an actual error or not. Thank you

Someone added the mark after it left the mint. Here are some more examples: http://goccf.com/t/126486

The numbers are a different style along with the size. Makes it easy to tell. But, if you are unsure then you did the right thing, this is the perfect place to find someone that is sure. Most of these folks are happy to share their experience and information.

Just a counterstamp. It's Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint).
