This Bank of England Half Dollar (1797) came with a Seaby holder marked -

"England 1774
Madrid Mint 4 Reales of Charles III counterstamped with hallmark of George III in emergency issue of 1797. Good VF + toned."

Note that "Madrid" is wrong. The undercoin was made in Seville.

Any idea about the multi colored toning?

My guess is previously long term storage in a "sulfur" laden envelope.

This is one cool c/s on a very desirable host coin! Museum quality, this. Any thoughts on the surviving population number, Bill?

These Half Dollars are considered "Rare". (Even scarcer than their crown-sized Dollar cousins).

Note that, when referring to this counterstamp, some wag said "The head of a Fool (English King George III) on the neck of an A-s-s (Spanish King Charles III)".

The other contemporary expression used with these coins was "two kings, not worth a crown" - the "crown" being 5 shillings, and the dollars only rated at 4 shillings 9 pence.
